The DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase is pleased to welcome the Sport Pylon Air Race (SPAR) group as a Partner for Showcase 2016!

Doc Bailey, the organizer of the Sport Pylon Air Races, said the races are being developed to promote light-sport aircraft (LSA). “Just as the NASCAR circuit showcases the qualities of auto racers, SPAR is designed to showcase the capabilities of LSA. All of the aircraft participating will meet LSA requirements – 120-knot top speed, 48-knot stall speed, and weights – but these racers will be the LSA built for performance.”

Bailey said SPAR plans to create a series of air races around the country. “We envision 8 to10 races around the country. Air races used to be the Super Bowl of the 1930s and 1940s with 200,000 people attending some of those races; we hope to re-create that excitement about air racing again, showcasing affordable aircraft and keeping the events affordable for people to attend — $20 admission; $2 hot dogs; that sort of thing.” Bailey said plans are underway to hold a demonstration air race in April 2017 to verify that SPAR has met all the requirements needed to obtain an FAA certificate to hold the races.

At Showcase 2016, SPAR will exhibit some of its race aircraft, including the Little Rascal Biplane, a Pitts-like sport plane. It will also introduce the LSA Rocket, an RV-4-like airplane modified to meet LSA requirements in a high-performance model.

Bailey said Showcase 2016 will be the first demonstration of the B.O.T. SC07 Speed Cruiser aircraft with a six-cylinder D-Motor engine. Bailey and SPAR use a special paraplegic-equipped version of that aircraft to teach combat-wounded veterans in an effort they call the “Broken Wing Project.” Four veterans have completed that program and earned a sport pilot certificate. “We plan to use the proceeds from SPAR to support the Broken Wing Project,” Bailey said.

SPAR will also exhibit its Speed Cruiser simulator with a Dynon D-1000 glass cockpit to give visitors a view of the specially equipped aircraft. “We’re excited to offer a couple of big firsts for our group at Showcase 2016,” Bailey said.
