The answer isn't always obvious, and that gray zone between "owner-performed maintenance" and "A&P required" trips up a lot of pilots. The good news? Once you understand where the lines are drawn and develop a rhythm for looking after your airplane, you'll be a safer, more self-sufficient pilot—and you'll probably save a few hundred bucks a year in the process.

Let's break it down.

What the Regulations Actually Say

Light sport aircraft operate under FAA rules that give owner-pilots more flexibility than most people realize. Under FAR Part 43, Appendix A, there's a list of "preventive maintenance" tasks that certificated pilots can perform on aircraft they own or operate. These include things like changing oil and filters, replacing spark plugs, servicing landing gear struts, replacing safety wire and cotter keys, and even fabric patching on non-structural areas.

For FAA-certificated LSAs, this list applies directly. For ASTM-compliant Special Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA), the manufacturer's maintenance manual becomes your bible—and some manufacturers give owners even more latitude than Part 43 does. Always start there before you pick up a wrench.

The bottom line: you have real authority over routine upkeep. But the moment work involves structural components, avionics, or anything that affects airworthiness in ways you're not trained to evaluate, that's a job for an A&P or a repairman certificate holder.

The Pre-Flight Check: More Than a Formality

Every pilot learns the pre-flight checklist in ground school. Most stick to it for the first few months, then start rushing through it once flying feels routine. Don't be that pilot.

A thorough pre-flight isn't just about catching the obvious stuff—it's your best early-warning system for catching things that are about to become problems. Here's what deserves genuine attention beyond the standard walk-around:

Spending an extra five minutes here isn't paranoia. It's the habit that keeps small issues from becoming in-flight emergencies.

Seasonal Maintenance: What Changes With the Weather

Flight training rarely covers how much the seasons affect your airplane. Here's a quick seasonal checklist worth building into your routine:

Spring: After a cold winter, inspect all rubber components—fuel lines, brake hoses, and seals—for cracking caused by repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Check battery health, especially if the aircraft sat for extended periods. Rodent nesting in cowlings and control runs is genuinely common in hangars and tie-down areas, so inspect thoroughly.

Summer: Heat accelerates tire degradation and can cause fuel venting issues if the aircraft sits on a hot ramp. Check tire pressure more frequently—heat expands air, and overinflated tires on a rough strip are a handling hazard. Fuel tank vents should be clear to prevent vapor lock.

Fall: This is the right time to schedule your annual condition inspection if you haven't already, so you're ahead of winter. Inspect for any corrosion that developed during humid summer months, particularly around control cable pulleys and attach points.

Winter: Cold-weather ops put extra stress on your engine during start-up. Follow your manufacturer's guidance on pre-heating—most two-stroke and four-stroke LSA engines benefit from pre-heat below 40°F. Check that fuel vent lines aren't susceptible to ice blockage.

Common Wear Items Every Owner Should Know

Think of these as the consumables of sport aviation—parts that wear out on a predictable schedule and that you should be monitoring proactively rather than reactively:

Spark plugs on four-stroke LSA engines typically need inspection every 50-100 hours and replacement every 200-300 hours depending on the engine. Cleaning and re-gapping is owner-doable under preventive maintenance rules.

Oil changes should happen every 25-50 hours on most LSA powerplants, or at least once a season regardless of hours. This is one of the highest-value things you can do for engine longevity.

Air filters get overlooked until they're visibly filthy. Inspect them every few flights in dusty environments; replace on the manufacturer's schedule regardless.

Brake pads on light aircraft don't last forever, especially on grass or gravel strips. Learn to visually inspect them and know the minimum thickness spec for your aircraft.

Cables and pulleys are worth a close look every 100 hours or annually. Fraying, corrosion, or pulleys that don't spin freely are red flags that need professional attention.

When to Call the A&P

Here's the honest part: knowing your limits is as important as knowing your capabilities. Call a certificated mechanic any time you encounter:

A good A&P who works on light sport aircraft is a relationship worth cultivating. Find one who knows your specific airframe, communicate openly about what you've observed, and don't skip the annual condition inspection to save money. It's your safety net.

The Bigger Picture

Getting comfortable with your aircraft's systems isn't about becoming a weekend mechanic. It's about developing the situational awareness to know when something's right and when something's off. Pilots who understand their airplanes make better decisions—on the ground and in the air.

Start with the pre-flight. Build the seasonal habits. Learn the wear items on your specific airframe. And never let the desire to save time or money push you past the boundary of what you're qualified to assess.

Your airplane will tell you what it needs. You just have to know how to listen.
